Key Points

  • XRP is down more than 60% from its high, and the token has been losing ground to Bitcoin recently.

  • Competition from stablecoins could threaten XRP's core value proposition.

XRP (CRYPTO: XRP) is a token developed by Ripple Labs that is designed to be a fast, low-transaction-cost solution for cross-border payments and for facilitating other functions on the XRP ledger. The cryptocurrency was launched in June 2012 and has seen some huge valuation swings since its debut.

In July 2025, XRP hit its lifetime high of $3.65 per token -- but it's seen a dramatic valuation pullback since. As of this writing, the token is down approximately 64% from its peak. Could investing in XRP right now be a move that sets you up for life financially?

XRP may need new catalysts to deliver life-changing returns

If the broader cryptocurrency market continues to gain valuation ground through stronger bull market cycles over the long term, there's a good chance that XRP's token price could climb well above its current level. The cryptocurrency market is cyclical, and a rising tide typically lifts all boats among top tokens.

On the other hand, XRP has been significantly underperforming Bitcoin as of late. Bitcoin's token price is still down roughly 8% year-to-date as of this writing, even after some recent rebound rallies. For comparison, XRP's token price is down roughly 30% across the same stretch.

Seeing smaller tokens make outsize moves, for better or worse, compared to Bitcoin is a common dynamic in the crypto market. On the other hand, XRP has only risen 20% over the last three months. Bitcoin has risen 27%.

Excluding stablecoins, XRP is still the fourth-largest cryptocurrency by valuation and has a market capitalization of roughly $82.5 billion -- but recent price trends suggest that the token may be at risk of further losing market share and mindshare among cryptocurrencies. There are a couple of key reasons for this.

For starters, Bitcoin's reputation as a digital asset that may function as a store of value amid periods of high inflation, other macroeconomic pressures, and geopolitical volatility has helped it gain share in the broader crypto market recently. Additionally, the core functional value proposition of XRP appears to be under threat with the proliferation of stablecoins.

XRP still offers a fast, low-transaction payment solution, but it's seen relatively low adoption as a payment technology -- and future adoption may be pressured due to the increased popularity of stablecoins. While XRP's price can be highly volatile over short periods, stablecoins are typically pegged to $1. The lower volatility in token prices could make stablecoins more popular for payments.

With this dynamic in mind, Ripple Labs may need to find other use cases for XRP within its ecosystem to spur big valuation gains for the token. Given the uncertainty on that front, I think it's unlikely that buying XRP as an investment will set you up for life.
