Key Points

  • ICICI Bank reported net profit growth of 20.1% year over year.

  • Domestic loan portfolio grew 22.8% year over year.

  • Net nonperforming asset ratio declined to 0.30% at quarter end.

On its second quarter of fiscal 2027 earnings call, held on Oct. 17, 2026, ICICI Bank (NYSE:IBN) announced a 20.1% year-over-year increase in net profit to 148.4 billion Indian rupees. The lender's ability to expand core profitability while maintaining clean asset quality provides a stable foundation for compounding returns. Three things management said stand out.

1. Core Profitability Driven by Customer-Centric Ecosystem Strategy

ICICI Bank focuses on driving core profit from underlying operations rather than relying on volatile trading income. It builds deep customer relationships across local ecosystems to capture high-margin lending and steady fee income.

At ICICI Bank, our strategic focus continues to be on growing profit before tax, excluding treasury through the 360-degree customer-centric approach and by serving opportunities across ecosystems and micro markets.

2. Balanced Loan Expansion Across Domestic and Foreign Markets

Total lending expanded rapidly as the bank mobilized foreign currency non-resident deposits, known as FCNR (B) deposits, to fund overseas growth. Strip out those international advances and domestic credit expansion remained robust across both consumer and commercial borrowers, with domestic loans growing 22.8% year over year.

Excluding loans provided by international branches of the bank against FCNR (B) deposits, total loans grew by 24.1% year-on-year and 7.3% sequentially.

3. Heavy Contingency Buffers Protect Balance Sheet Stability

Asset quality stayed clean as net nonperforming assets, which are loans where borrowers have defaulted, dropped to 0.3% of total advances. Management chose to maintain deep contingency reserves to absorb potential economic shocks.

In addition, the bank continues to hold contingency provisions of INR 131 billion or about 0.7% of total advances at September 30, 2026.

Looking Ahead

Opportunities for risk-calibrated expansion are multiplying across major market segments, supported by a dense branch footprint and low funding costs. Growth relies on disciplined underwriting and pricing power rather than aggressive volume chasing.

Looking ahead, we see many opportunities to drive risk-calibrated profitable growth and grow market share across key segments.

Predictable long-term shareholder returns require maintaining balance sheet strength through economic cycles.

We remain focused on maintaining a strong balance sheet, prudent provisioning and healthy levels of capital, while delivering sustainable and predictable returns to our shareholders.
