If VAT Group sat on your watchlist rather than in your portfolio, the result may feel like an expensive omission. For VAT Group shareholders, the return over the past year was 82.3%, including dividends. That gain arrived alongside record quarterly order intake and sales later in the period, supported by strong AI and technology driven semiconductor demand. If you rewind to October 2025, what clues in the onshoring and digitalization story could have signalled that vacuum valve content per fab tool might surprise on the upside?
The useful thing about a Narrative is that the reasoning is checkable: the assumptions sit beside the argument, and together they imply an estimated Fair Value you can disagree with.
The move put VAT Group in the middle of this trade. Scan 91 robotics and automation stocks for other companies exposed to it.
The shares cost CHF346 at the start of the period, so any view on VAT Group had to start with whether that price already captured the onshoring and digitalization buzz.
The bullish Narrative pointed to a Fair Value of CHF410. It leaned on faster conversion of specification wins into sales as new fabs came online, backed by assumptions for 18.3% annual revenue growth and profit margins rising to 29.6%.
The bearish Narrative argued for a Fair Value of CHF260. It highlighted the risk that 80% exposure to semiconductors, customer concentration, and geopolitical disruption could leave earnings closer to CHF338.7 million on lower assumed growth and a 26.0% margin.
The strongest fresh fact for VAT Group was the Q3 2026 update that reported the highest quarterly order intake and sales in its history, with order volumes tripling year on year as AI driven semiconductor demand gathered pace. That outcome leaned toward the bullish case built on faster spec win conversion and heavier valve content per tool. Yet H1 2026 revenue and net income both fell compared with H1 2025, even as net margin edged up to 19.3%. The evidence cut both ways.
The useful lesson is to separate backlog from delivery. For a future VAT Group style call, track whether record orders show up in revenue and earnings within a couple of reporting periods. The key test is whether higher intake turns into stronger absolute profit and not just a slightly better margin on a shrinking base.
VAT Group now trades at CHF609, up sharply from CHF346 over the past year. The current Narrative sets a Fair Value below that level, framing today’s quote as rich unless execution on capacity, AI linked demand and higher margin services stays on track.
Anyone paying CHF609 is effectively assuming that expanded factories, a larger installed base and AI driven wafer fab equipment orders all convert into durable cash flows. The question is how the selected Narrative’s concerns about utilisation, pricing power and timing of service revenues weigh on that assumption.
"Although VAT Group is ramping factory output and lifting headcount to support a CHF 450m quarterly run rate, the recent 29.0% EBITDA margin alongside front-loaded ramp costs and lower cost absorption suggests that any slowdown in wafer fab equipment orders or delay in AI-driven fab projects could leave capacity underutilised and pressure earnings rather than scale margins."

After VAT Group, you could look one step sideways rather than forward. AI chips do not just need clean vacuum environments. They also need power and heat carefully managed.
High density computing racks generate intense heat and consume heavy electricity. Keeping that under control requires specialised power equipment and precise thermal management units.
One infrastructure supplier targets those guts of modern data centres. It designs systems that keep servers powered, cooled and running steadily for cloud and AI workloads.
This is not about chip design or fab tools. It is about the pipes and coolant that keep digital capacity usable.
If AI demand stays hardware hungry, that kind of behind the scenes gear could become quietly crucial.
One Narrative has already put a figure on it. → Uncover the company trading 49% below one Narrative's Fair Value
