Simply Wall St·10/18/2026 04:41:30
Listen to the news

Travelers Companies stock barely flinched after Q3 2026 earnings, closing up about 1.5% near US$389, even as the insurer posted another quarter of very strong profitability. Core income reached US$1.95b with core return on equity at 22.1%, powered by an 86.8% combined ratio that reflects disciplined underwriting rather than one off luck.

Short term traders see a modest move. Longer term investors are weighing a business that is generating robust returns today against forecasts that point to earnings and revenue drifting lower over the next few years.

Travelers bullish story: underwriting “durability” on trial

"We would absolutely reiterate the durability of underlying underwriting income.” Schnitzer says it in the Q&A, after an analyst remarks “I didn’t hear you guys say that again explicitly.”

Travelers backs this claim with hard numbers. The Q3 combined ratio of 86.8% and an unchanged 84.1% underlying combined ratio keep underwriting firmly in high quality territory. Core income of US$1.95b and core ROE of 22.1% for the quarter, 24.1% trailing, show those economics are still feeding returns. What weakens the bullish script is not the result sheet. It is the softer forward language and heavier reliance on Q&A to restate the ambition.

Travelers bear case: fuzzier return targets, pricing flex

"A quantified target (“mid-teens”) has become an unquantified one (“return objectives”), while trailing core ROE sits at 24.1%, a tenth of a point from where it stood when the target was last invoked."

The concern is that looser language around ROE and more frequent mentions of price flexibility could point to softer discipline later. In the current quarter, the numbers argue against that fear. Core ROE remains very high, reserve development is favorable even after a US$295m asbestos charge, and Business Insurance still prints solid renewal premium change alongside strong retention. The risk is more about future policy choices than any erosion visible in Q3. As a result, this print neither confirms nor dismisses the bear story outright.

Hunt For Quiet Pricing Power

Travelers Companies just reminded investors that a strong quarter does not always settle the long-term debate on returns. The real opportunity is finding stocks that could be undervalued before the market corrects them.
