M&T Bank stock slipped about 1.5% on Friday to around US$215, extending a weak three month stretch where the shares have trailed by roughly 14% over 90 days. That looks like a quick shrug at a perfectly solid third quarter, where net income excluding one off items came in at US$732 million and earnings per share landed at US$5.08.
The real story sits on the balance sheet. Total loans reached US$144.8b while non performing loans were US$1.3b, a combination that keeps credit quality squarely in focus for anyone thinking beyond today’s price flicker.

Earnings grab the headlines, but investors who care about what M&T Bank is worth usually focus on the cash flowing through the business over time rather than a single quarter of profit.
On M&T Bank's cash flows alone, the stock could be a dramatic 47% undervalued.
Fans of M&T Bank argue that heavy tech and process spend should eventually feed through to a leaner operation.
"Ongoing technology and process reengineering investment of about US$1.2b per year, and a sharp increase in customer-affecting releases to around 65,000 annually, provides a path to future cost efficiencies and more scalable operations that can support net margin resilience."
Q3 shows only partial progress. Noninterest expense reached US$1.39b and the efficiency ratio moved to 54.4%, even as revenue and net interest income held steady. Margin held at a 3.65% NIM, which supports the resilience part of the claim, but cost takeout milestones are still early.
Skeptics focus on whether rising expenses and pricier deposits will start to bite harder into profitability at M&T Bank.
"Increased labor and compensation expenses leading to higher noninterest expenses might continue to weigh on profitability. This risk is now reinforced by noninterest expense running at about US$1.35b in Q2 2026 and guidance that full year 2026 expenses will be at the high end of the US$5.5b to US$5.6b range, which could constrain net margins if revenue growth does not keep pace."
Fresh numbers give that concern some traction. Quarterly costs ticked up to US$1.39b, and interest bearing deposit costs rose to 2.05%. Net interest margin compressed slightly to 3.65%, so expense and funding pressure are clearly present, even if earnings remain healthy.
