Birlasoft’s latest headline was eye catching. The company was named an OpenAI Select Partner, with a promise to help enterprises build and scale AI solutions responsibly and at size. Investors who held Birlasoft from the start of the year are down 25.3%, including dividends. If you had bought on 1 January expecting AI tie ups and GenAI deals to reward that bet, how should this kind of partnership really be judged now?
This theme extends beyond Birlasoft. See which of 151 AI small caps may still merit a closer look.
The shares cost ₹432 at the start of the period, and Birlasoft sat between two very different stories about what AI and digital work could mean for the business.
The bullish Narrative pointed to a Fair Value of ₹538, a price implied by assumptions of 9.3% annual revenue growth and profit margins rising from 8.9% to 11.7% over three years.
The more cautious Narrative anchored on a Fair Value of ₹403, built on 5.2% revenue growth, an 11.6% margin, and concern over high client concentration with the top 40 customers.
The OpenAI Select Partner appointment gave fresh support to the bullish Birlasoft story that leaned on AI heavy work and larger GenAI programs. At the same time, the reported Q1 2027 figures showed revenue of ₹13,793.96m and net income of ₹1,609.97m, with net margin reported at 11.7%, which broadly backed both earlier margin targets.
The key lesson is simple. When a tech services pitch leans on AI, do not just track announcements. Instead, check whether reported net margin is moving toward the levels that the original thesis used to justify the investment case.
Birlasoft shares are now ₹318, leaving anyone who held from the start of the year facing a loss of about 25.3% on price alone. The selected Narrative still places its Fair Value above the current price, based on confidence in an AI first delivery model and richer contract mix.
That gap only matters if you think Birlasoft can turn higher TCV, AI infused platforms and a bigger sales force into broader, more resilient revenue that eventually outweighs contract structure headwinds and wage pressure. A buyer today is really judging whether that AI first engine can pull margins and earnings to those Narrative assumptions.
"The current narrative that Birlasoft is undervalued implies that the share price does not fully reflect its cash-rich balance sheet, 16.1% EBITDA margin in Q1 FY27 and the potential earnings from structurally different, AI-infused, outcome-based contracts."

Birlasoft is pitching AI services, but your AI story can also hinge on the physical plumbing underneath those projects.
Running bigger models demands more computing power, connectivity and data movement, turning software ambitions into infrastructure questions.
Another large tech group concentrates on that layer, providing chips and software to move, connect, secure and manage digital activity.
Its customers still care about AI, yet they also prioritize bandwidth, reliability and scale across varied workloads.
If that need keeps widening, this kind of infrastructure specialist could influence where more AI related cash ultimately flows.
