If you had backed the bullish 2025 story around Evolv Technologies, multi-year deals with schools, hospitals and arenas may have seemed like a solid way to lock in recurring subscriptions. For Evolv Technologies shareholders, the loss over the past year was 48.5%, including dividends. If that outcome surprised you, which part of the original case about 3-year revenue growth near 20%, margin improvement to industry levels, and a triple digit future P/E needed more scrutiny?
Evolv Technologies has already moved. Pinpoint other ways to investigate the theme among 37 AI small caps.
The shares cost US$8.08 at the start, and Evolv Technologies sat between two sharply different but plausible stories about its future.
The bullish camp treated a Fair Value of US$9.5, the price implied if its assumptions played out, as reasonable based on 19.8% revenue growth and profit margins reaching 9.0%, helped by multi-year education and hospital contracts.
The bearish view used a Fair Value of US$5.5, built on 18.1% revenue growth, 8.8% margins, and concern that privacy regulation would choke adoption and pricing power.
Evolv Technologies reported Q2 2026 revenue of US$43.8 million, up from US$32.5 million a year earlier, and the loss narrowed from US$40.5 million to US$9.3 million as net margin moved from a loss of 124.6% to a loss of 21.3%. Profitability was still not reached, so the bullish margin target remained unproven and the evidence cut both ways.
The key assumption was that strong multi-year deals and AI screening products would quickly translate into healthy earnings. For any other stock with a similar pitch, it may be useful to track the trend in net margin and absolute profit and not treat revenue growth alone as validation.
At a share price of US$4.16, Evolv Technologies is priced well below where the Narrative's Fair Value sits, based on that analysis rather than any certainty. The focus has shifted from pure adoption worries to whether AI driven security subscriptions can absorb supply chain friction and still support cash generation.
For the recent fall to look like an opening instead of a warning, a buyer today would need to believe that evolving contract mix, upgrade costs and component availability still allow recurring revenue and margins to strengthen over time.
"The main condition for success is that Evolv converts its under 5% penetration of an estimated 700,000 serviceable doorways and growing multi-vertical footprint into long-lived subscription contracts supported by its AI data moat and manufacturing scale."
