Listen to the news

Key Points

  • Alcoa completed $2.6 billion in debt financing for its AliGroup purchase.

  • The company agreed to sell Massena East land for $315 million.

  • Sequential aluminum output grew by 15,000 metric tons in the third quarter.

On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 15, 2026, Alcoa (NYSE:AA) outlined progress on its major acquisition plans and cash generation strategy. Understanding how management balances debt reduction, asset sales, and operational efficiency provides vital context for evaluating the business over a multiyear horizon. Three key observations from management stand out.

1. Debt Reduction Takes Priority After Major Acquisition Closes

Management completed $2.6 billion in debt financing to fund its cash acquisition of AliGroup, an aluminum producer. Paying down that debt, or deleveraging, will take priority once the transaction completes in the first half of 2027.

Following closing of the acquisition, delevering will be our priority.

2. Non-Core Asset Sales Support Capital Targets

The company reached an agreement to sell a portion of its Massena East site for up to $315 million. The deal represents the first transaction under its asset monetization program, which aims to convert non-core property into cash through 2030.

This is the first transaction supporting our target to generate $500 million to $1 billion from asset monetization by 2030.
-- William Oplinger, President and Chief Executive Officer

3. Refining and Smelting Performance Yields Operational Records

Aluminum output expanded across key facilities as smelting and refining operational stability returned. Operating improvements generated six production records year to date.

We achieved 6 year-to-date production records, increased aluminum production by approximately 15,000 metric tons sequentially, completed the Alumar smelter restart and delivered a significant performance recovery at the Pinjarra refinery.
-- William Oplinger, President and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Smelting and refining operations are running with improved stability across key global sites. Low global inventories and tight regional supply in North America give the business leverage as production scales.

For the fourth quarter, we continue to expect strong operating performance across both segments, continuing the momentum from the third quarter.
-- Molly Beerman, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Management continues to focus on integration planning and disciplined capital allocation ahead of closing its major acquisition.

These actions demonstrate that we are executing the strategy we presented at Investor Day and strengthening Alcoa for long-term value creation.
-- William Oplinger, President and Chief Executive Officer
