Nvidia AI Deal Talks Just Gave Bulls a Fresh Reason to Buy NVDA Stock

Listen to the news

Nvidia (NVDA) is currently the center of debate amid ongoing claims around artificial intelligence (AI) productivity. Now, the chip company is reportedly in talks to acquire or deepen its investment in Reflection AI, a U.S. startup building open-weight AI models.

Nvidia already owns a large stake in this company. The firm has reportedly invested $800 million into Reflection, which itself was valued at $25 billion in a March funding round. The talks are early, and a deal with Nvidia could take weeks to finalize, or could fall apart completely.

Still, the strategy is clear. Reflection creates open-weight AI models that developers can use, edit, and run. If Nvidia is able to take a stronger grip on that ecosystem, it may bring other developers and businesses onboard to create on Nvidia's power infrastructure.

Nvidia Competitive Edge Faces New Challenges

Nvidia shares have gained more than 16% in 2026, giving the company a market value of roughly $5.3 trillion.

The stock is now trading at quite reasonable levels. Its forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 24.7 times is below the semiconductor industry median, while its price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 25.5 times remains high in absolute terms.

Despite the positives, the risks have not disappeared for Nvidia. Mainstream hardware from usual customers is encroaching on Nvidia, sales of its custom chips to China are threatened by a ban, and some investors worry about slowdowns in spending on AI chips. A Reflection AI deal may strengthen Nvidia's hand, but it won't resolve those pressures.

AI Could Strengthen Nvidia Ecosystem

For Nvidia, this is about more than owning another AI company. Open models can broaden AI adoption because businesses can customize them and deploy them to suit their needs. More adoption could mean more demand for the GPUs and networking systems used to train and run those models.

Whether Nvidia gains a larger stake, makes a few other technology deals, lands a simple licensing agreement, or conducts a total acquisition of the software, it will have a more powerful compounding base. The form of the deal is important, especially from a regulatory standpoint, but the bigger picture would be to bring Nvidia's involvement closer to the development and implementation of AI models.

A deal with Reflection might be a sign of Nvidia broadening its partnerships beyond its roster of hyperscale cloud partners, too.

Why Nvidia Has Room to Make a Move

Nvidia has had a solid track record of earnings beats in the past few years. This remained true in its latest quarterly earnings report, giving the company considerable firepower.

In the fiscal second quarter of 2027, Nvidia reported $96.2 billion in revenue, up 106% year-over-year (YOY), while data-center revenue climbed 117% YOY to $89 billion. On the bottom line, net income reached $59.7 billion, up 26% YOY.

More importantly, Nvidia also returned $26 billion to shareholders through buybacks and dividends in Q2 fiscal 2027.

CEO Jensen Huang captured the opportunity in a statement: “AI has reached its inflection point.” Huang also argued that AI is doing useful work and that “compute is revenue.” As companies put AI into more products and operations, they will need computing capacity. Owning a larger role in the open-model ecosystem could help sustain that demand.

Looking ahead, the company forecast Q3 revenue of $108 billion, plus or minus 2%, pointing to continued demand for AI infrastructure.

Wall Street Sees Huge Upside for NVDA Stock

Wall Street is overwhelmingly bullish on Nvidia. Overall, NVDA stock has a consensus “Strong Buy” rating based on 51 analysts with coverage. The average price target of $327.27 implies roughly 51% potential upside from current levels.

Recently, Morgan Stanley reiterated an “Overweight” rating on NVDA stock with a $300 price target. Similarly, Goldman Sachs raised its price target to $300 in August while maintaining a ”Neutral" rating. Some analysts are even more bullish; Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya has a $350 price target and a “Buy” rating for Nvidia stock.
