Missed Eaton's Run? Here Is What Holders Saw

Simply Wall St·10/16/2026 09:29:53
Listen to the news

If you only glanced at the headlines, Eaton’s recent updates looked mixed. Revenue in Q2 2026 was higher than a year earlier, yet profit and net margin both moved the wrong way. Investors who held Eaton from the start of the year are up 24.0%, including dividends. If you were deciding back on 1 January 2026, with only the early data center story and valuation debate on record, what really justified taking that risk?

Narratives are how investors here put a case on the record, with explicit assumptions about revenue, margins and the multiple. Those assumptions imply an estimated Fair Value.

This theme extends beyond Eaton. See which of 41 power grid technology and infrastructure stocks may still merit a closer look.

The Two Eaton Stories Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost US$319 at the start of the period, so anyone looking at Eaton then had to decide which story about its future felt more realistic.

On the optimistic side, the bullish Narrative put Fair Value at US$394, or 24% above the start price. It leaned on 9.0% annual revenue growth assumptions and expected Eaton’s profit margin to reach 17.4%, helped by data center demand and electrification projects.

The more cautious view set Fair Value at US$288, or 10% below the start price. That bearish Narrative still allowed for 6.0% yearly revenue growth but flagged the risk that heavy data center exposure and capacity expansion could pressure margins if demand disappointed.

What The Eaton Evidence Actually Tested

The clearest development was Eaton leaning harder into data centers, with the Boyd Thermal purchase, new Nebraska switchgear plant and VoltServer partnership all backing the bullish focus on AI power and cooling. The financial print pulled the other way. Revenue reached US$8,531m in Q2 2026 versus US$7,028m a year earlier, while net income slipped and net margin moved from 14.0% to 9.6%. Overall, the period cut both ways.

The key lesson is simple. When a thesis leans on richer margins from higher value projects, do not just track sales or backlog. Compare the promised margin step up with the reported net margin every quarter to see if the story is actually showing up in earnings quality.

What Eaton’s Current Price Already Assumes

Today Eaton trades at US$402, up strongly from the start price, while the selected cautious Narrative now places its Fair Value below where the market is willing to deal.

That view leans on long-lived aerospace certification versus more crowded electrical gear and data center cooling. A buyer today must assume data center returns stay healthy even as capacity expands and rivals chase the same projects.

"Switchgear and power distribution get specified into a building's electrical design, certified to code, then live there 20 to 40 years, so the installed base converts into decades of parts and service. The genuine rail sits elsewhere though: in Aerospace, where a part is certified to an aircraft platform and switching suppliers means re-certifying with the FAA. It is similar to Texas Instruments' requalification logic with a regulator attached, feeding a decades-long spares annuity that Schneider has no equivalent of."

One Step Beyond Eaton

Eaton shows how much AI power needs sturdier electrical hardware and cooling. Your next question is what keeps that heat under control.

AI racks push intense energy into tight spaces, and air alone struggles to move it out efficiently.

Another specialist focuses on liquid systems that pull heat off the hardware and circulate it away through mostly closed loops.

Those setups can sharply cut water use compared with older tower style cooling, easing resource concerns as well as reliability worries.

If AI buildouts keep packing more power into each rack, that kind of plumbing could become as central as the chips themselves.
