Rocket Lab (RKLB) shares slipped on Thursday after the space company pushed Neutron’s debut flight into 2027, disappointing investors awaiting a major expansion of its launch capabilities. In the press release, management cited manufacturing issues that require additional work to resolve.
Rocket Lab has yet to provide a firm replacement launch date, which suggests shareholders face another period of uncertainty ahead. Including today’s decline, Rocket Lab stock is down about 65% from its year-to-date high.
Neutron was previously expected to debut in the final quarter of 2026, but manufacturing defects in its first-stage propellant domes have disrupted that schedule.
According to Rocket Lab, that manufacturing problem has been resolved, but investigating and correcting the process consumed valuable development time. For shareholders, the concern extends beyond a postponed milestone.
A later debut pushes back opportunities to demonstrate Neutron’s capabilities and build a revenue-generating launch schedule. Development spending also precedes the commercial returns investors are anticipating.
Investors bailed on RKLB shares this morning because they must now wait longer for evidence supporting Neutron’s growth potential, while another missed deadline makes the timing of those returns harder to assess.
The announced delay led KeyBanc’s senior analyst Michael Leshock to reduce his price target on Rocket Lab shares to $100. He nevertheless maintained an “Overweight” rating on the company.
Leshock trimmed his estimates to account for one fewer revenue-generating Neutron launch next year. He also attributed the downward revision to broader multiple compression across high-growth space stocks.
That combination matters. Rocket Lab faces both a company-specific execution setback and a market less willing to pay generously for anticipated growth.
That said, KeyBanc’s bullish rating and a revised price target that still suggests about a 90% upside from here signal continued conviction in the company’s longer-term prospects.
Other Wall Street analysts are just as bullish on Rocket Lab for the next 12 months.
The consensus rating on RKLB sits at “Strong Buy,” with the mean price target of $107 indicating potential upside of about 100% from here.
