What Bears Saw Before PDD Slid

Simply Wall St·10/15/2026 18:33:36
Listen to the news

On the surface, PDD looked like it was doing what investors usually want. Revenue and operating profit were higher in the latest quarter, even as management poured money into supply chain projects and ecosystem support. Investors who held PDD over the past year are down 36.2%, including dividends. If you had been deciding on 14 October 2025 whether to commit fresh capital, which early signs of shrinking net margin would have mattered most?

On Simply Wall St, a Narrative is an investor's thesis written down: the reasoning, plus the numbers it rests on. Run those numbers and you get an estimated Fair Value.

PDD has already moved. See which of 32 high quality undervalued stocks still trade below our estimates.

The Two PDD Narratives Investors Had In Front Of Them

The shares cost US$127 at the start of the period. Anyone looking at PDD then had to decide whether heavy ecosystem and supply chain spending would pay off or simply squeeze net margin for longer.

The bullish Narrative put Fair Value at US$143, 13% above the start price. It leaned on assumptions such as 10.7% annual revenue growth, a 26.5% profit margin and a future P/E of 13.0x within roughly three years.

The bearish view set Fair Value at US$87.06, 32% below the start price. That camp focused on risks such as shrinking profit margins to 20.3% and rising regulatory and trade pressures around PDD’s international push.

What The Results Changed For The PDD Margin Story

Quarterly filings showed the cleanest test of both Narratives. PDD reported Q2 2026 revenue of CNY112.4b against CNY104.0b a year earlier, while net income slipped from CNY30.8b to CNY27.2b and net margin moved from 29.6% to 24.2%. That pattern of higher sales with a thinner margin broadly supported the cautious case about prolonged profit compression.

The episode turned on one assumption investors could actually track. The bullish view rested on margins moving toward 26.5%. The simple check elsewhere is to line up that target against the reported net margin trend and ask whether each new quarter is edging toward it or away.

What PDD's Lower Price Now Asks You To Believe

PDD now trades at US$81.45, well below the past entry point and after a 36.2% loss over the past year. The selected Narrative still places Fair Value above that level, resting on the idea that ecosystem spending and regulatory costs do not overwhelm the underlying commerce engine.

The key judgment for a buyer today is whether PDD’s heavy supply chain and rural logistics investments can translate into durable merchant and user growth that offsets margin pressure. That is what would need to be true for this fall to look like an opportunity instead of a warning.

"The main thing that has to go right is that PDD Holdings converts its multi year supply chain, first party brand and rural logistics investments into sustainable merchant and user growth that more than offsets higher compliance, governance and cross border operating costs."

  • Company 1 - 41% below our estimate - turn a record technology and industrial backlog into modular and electrical project work.
  • Company 2 - 47% below our estimate - expand online betting reach as proprietary tech and marketing efficiency lift user engagement.
  • Company 3 - 42% below our estimate - convert specialised scientific talent into consulting projects on AI, utilities and regulated products.
