A New Bullish Note on PLTR Stock Ignores Major Threats

Listen to the news

Barclays initiated coverage of Palantir (PLTR) stock on Oct. 8 with an “Overweight” rating and a $265 price target. According to analyst Anthony Valentini, the company should be able to avoid being hurt by competition and will likely be the "leading beneficiary of government migration toward a unified data ecosystem."

However, Palantir does have an up-and-coming competitor in C3.ai (AI). The company recently unveiled a promising product, while its own federal business is growing rapidly. Notably, Anthropic may also be progressively posing more of a competitive threat. Finally, Palantir faces meaningful political pressure in both the U.S. and the United Kingdom.

In light of these issues, and considering Palantir's high valuation, investors may want to avoid shares of PLTR stock. Let's take a closer look.

C3.ai and Anthropic Pose Growing Threats to Palantir

In a note to investors on Oct. 12, Northland upgraded C3.ai stock to an “Outperform” rating from “Market Perform.” The catalyst for the upgrade was C3.ai's new system, C3 Code, which reportedly enables users to launch agentic AI applications in just days using autonomous agents for development. According to analyst Mike Latimore, applications developed with C3 Code can “leverage the latest and/or most cost-effective LLMs and run with optimal security and reliability.”

Meanwhile, C3.ai's new marketing events appear to be fruitful so far, as the first one reportedly attracted 46 companies. The firm has already scheduled three more of these events as part of its Accelerator program.

In C3.ai's first quarter of fiscal 2027, overall bookings jumped 73% sequentially, while bookings with the federal government soared 138% versus the same period a year earlier. In Q1, the company closed deals with 22 firms and government entities, including Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Ford (F), the U.S. Department of Defense, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Finally, earlier this year, prominent tech research firm Forrester gave C3.ai the highest score among 15 AI platform providers.

While C3.ai poses a threat, Anthropic also made an acquisition in May to aid its entry into the AI deployment sector. Such a development will help bring Anthropic into direct competition with Palantir, while its AI offerings have also been described as significantly easier to use than the latter's software.

U.S. and U.K. Political Developments Could Meaningfully Slow Growth

Palantir's U.S. government revenue came in at $809 million in Q2, making up a significant portion of the company's total sales of $1.935 billion. However, Democrats are generally hostile toward the company, partly due to its work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). With that in mind, polling veteran Nate Silver recently estimated that Democrats' odds of controlling the Senate and House next year are 74.8% and 93.1%, respectively, up from the 56.2% and 85.5% estimated on Aug. 5. So, there's a good chance that a Democrat-controlled Congress could take deals away from Palantir.

Meanwhile, in the U.K., there is growing pressure on the Labour government to exercise an option early next year to opt out of Palantir's contract with the National Health Service (NHS). The contract is worth an estimated £330 million ($437 million).

The Bottom Line on PLTR Stock

Currently, Palantir stock has a consensus “Moderate Buy” rating on Wall Street based on 29 analysts with coverage. However, the stock also has an exceptionally high valuation across several multiples. For example, PLTR stock has a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 159.3 times.

In light of the meaningful threats facing the company, and its extraordinarily high valuation, Palantir stock does not appear to have a favorable risk-reward profile right now. Investors may want to avoid shares for the time being.
