Morgan Stanley’s third quarter results outperformed Wall Street’s expectations for both revenue and profit, yet the market responded negatively. Management attributed the quarter’s performance to continued growth in its wealth management business, with record net new assets and ongoing expansion of client relationships. CEO Ted Pick noted, “Wealth had a record quarter with revenues of over $9 billion with milestone levels of net new assets of $232 billion and fee-based flows of $80 billion.” However, leadership acknowledged that market activity moderated later in the quarter due to higher interest rates and renewed geopolitical tensions, factors that contributed to investor caution and tempered overall sentiment.
Looking ahead, Morgan Stanley’s outlook is rooted in further scaling its wealth and investment management businesses, ongoing technology investments, and navigating a complex macroeconomic environment. Management highlighted the durability of its client acquisition funnel and emphasized the role of technology and artificial intelligence in enhancing productivity and client retention. CFO Sharon Yeshaya stated, “We continue to invest across our technology stack, embracing AI tools to support our infrastructure, business growth, and people,” while CEO Ted Pick added that the firm is “double overweight” in allocating resources to the AI opportunity, underscoring its strategic importance for future growth.
Management highlighted robust wealth management flows, strength in institutional securities, and strategic investments in technology as key drivers of the quarter, while market volatility and interest rates shaped client activity.
Management expects continued momentum in wealth management, expanded AI integration, and a careful approach to macroeconomic and regulatory challenges to shape performance in the coming quarters.
In future quarters, the StockStory team will closely monitor (1) continued growth and retention of net new assets in wealth management, (2) the pace and impact of AI-driven technology investments on operational efficiency, and (3) how the firm navigates volatile macroeconomic and geopolitical environments. Execution on client acquisition, margin expansion, and integration of digital solutions will be critical signposts for Morgan Stanley’s strategy.
Morgan Stanley currently trades at $181.91, down from $186.63 just before the earnings. In the wake of this quarter, is it a buy or sell? See for yourself in our full research report (it’s free).
