BlackRock (BLK) Stock Price Trails Record Margins And Fee Pressure Questions

Simply Wall St·10/15/2026 02:35:57
Listen to the news

BlackRock stock inched up about 0.7% today, a muted move for a firm that just reported one of its most powerful quarters in recent memory. The share price reaction looks cautious while the Q3 earnings story is anything but, with record revenue of US$7.8b and operating income of US$3.3b grabbing the spotlight.

For an asset manager often viewed as a slow compounder, the real headline is profitability. Operating margin expanded to 47.8% and earnings per share landed at US$15.93. That margin strength is the hinge on which the rest of this earnings story turns.

BlackRock bull story hits key profitability milestones

Bulls argue BlackRock is shifting from a low fee index giant toward a higher margin mix in private markets, technology and precision products. Q3 gives real support to that view. Record revenue of US$7.8b, operating income of US$3.3b and a 47.8% operating margin line up with management’s message that higher value businesses are scaling. Recurring fee margin of about 48.6% and 11% organic base fee growth show clients are paying for more complex solutions, not just cheap beta. Technology revenue grew, with Aladdin and services subscription income up 14% and annual contract value up 12%. Private markets helped too, with US$68b raised over 12 months and US$25b in private credit in the first full year with HPS. The US$205b of quarterly inflows, including sizeable ETF, cash and alternatives flows, supports the claim of a broad, multi engine platform.

Bear case on fees and execution not fully closed

Skeptics worry that fee compression, expensive acquisitions and tech spending eventually eat into BlackRock’s economics. Q3 softens some of that argument but does not eliminate it. Expenses rose 14%, quicker than revenue, with compensation up 12% and sales related costs up 22%. This reflects heavier investment in private markets and distribution. That is manageable while performance fees of US$630m and contribution from HPS stay healthy, but it leaves less room if markets or flows cool. Effective fee pressure in core passive products still matters, even as higher fee categories grow. G&A increasing at a mid single digit clip after deals shows integration is not costless. EPS grew strongly and buybacks of US$550m help per share metrics, yet reliance on performance fees and transaction heavy businesses means the bear case around more volatile earnings and integration risk is not fully disproved.

After rising expenses, fee pressure and heavier reliance on performance income, it helps to step back and review our independent risk analysis for BlackRock which shows 2 important warning signs.
