Alexandr Wang Brought Elon Musk’s Lean-Team Playbook to Mark Zuckerberg — It’s Now One of the ‘Tentpoles’ of Meta’s AI Strategy

Alexandr Wang, Chief AI Officer at Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META), has been taking notes on Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:SPCX) CEO Elon Musk, and one lesson made it all the way to Mark Zuckerberg and into the center of the company’s artificial intelligence strategy.

Small Teams, Fast Moves

In a podcast appearance with David Senra published on Monday, Wang said Musk has demonstrated at various points in his career that a “small, incredibly cracked, highly technical team” that is very flat can get a great deal done.

“You can accomplish a lot very, very quickly,” Wang said.

Wang added that the approach was something he discussed with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg early in his time at Meta.

Zuckerberg was excited about it, according to Wang, and it became one of the “tentpoles” of Meta’s strategy, built on a flat, highly technical team with “very high talent density.”

Meta Cut Workforce to Bet Bigger on AI

In May, Meta cut about 10% of its global workforce and reassigned roughly 7,000 employees to AI-focused teams in a restructuring designed to support its growing investments in the technology.

However, Zuckerberg reportedly told employees that the reorganization did not unfold as “clean” as planned, according to Reuters.

Speed Beats Headcount

Influencer Mario Nawfal said on X that Meta is “now deliberately borrowing from the way Elon builds small, highly technical teams.”

He added that “at some point, adding more people stops making you faster,” and that in AI, “the speed of a decision can matter as much as the resources behind it.”

When Musk took over Twitter, now X, in 2022, he slashed its global workforce by thousands.

Musk’s Lean Teams

Andrej Karpathy, a former AI director at Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA), said in 2024 that Musk “was always like a force against growth.”

He said Musk’s approach minimizes middle management and favors technical expertise over hierarchy, treating engineers as “the source of truth.”

Price Action: Meta closed 3.38% higher on Monday at $742.96 and fell 0.53% to $739 in early pre-market trading on Tuesday.

Benzinga Edge rankings indicate Meta’s stock has a Momentum score in the 73rd percentile and a Growth score in the 77th percentile.
