Did Embecta's 56% Fall Catch You Out? What Investors Missed

Simply Wall St·10/12/2026 03:32:59
Listen to the news

If you had been weighing Embecta against other healthcare ideas in October 2025 and decided to sit it out, the past year looked very different for you than for those who bought in. For Embecta shareholders, the loss over the past year was 56.1%, including dividends. With lawsuits now alleging that earlier guidance ignored weakness in the U.S. pen needle business, which assumptions or recorded warnings could an investor have checked at the start?

Embecta has already moved. See which of 29 high quality undervalued stocks still trade below our estimates.

The Two Embecta Stories Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost US$13.59 at the start, and Embecta sat between two very different stories about where its diabetes hardware business could go next.

The bullish case saw a Fair Value of US$16.67, a price implied by forecasts, built on GLP-1 partnerships expanding global reach and profit margins rising toward 16.7% over a 3 year stretch.

The bearish view pointed to a Fair Value of US$11.83, with pressure from reimbursement cuts and newer diabetes technologies seen as long term threats to legacy pen needles.

What The Results Changed For The Embecta Thesis

Embecta’s later filings showed Q3 2026 revenue of US$271.7 million versus US$295.5 million a year earlier, with net income lower and net margin moving from 15.4% to 7.8%. That challenged the previously discussed 16.7% margin path in the bullish case. Securities class actions over guidance on the U.S. pen needle line further supported the more cautious view.

The episode hinged on one assumption: that pen needle demand and pricing would hold up. For any healthcare hardware stock, you would now check segment level trends and margin guidance against later reported revenue, profit and net margin for that specific product line.

What Embecta's Lower Price Asks You To Believe

Embecta trades at US$5.68 today, and the selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits below the current price. That view rests on the idea that the market is already paying up for GLP 1 partnerships, auto-injectors and the Owen Mumford deal.

The key question for you is whether ongoing U.S. pen needle weakness and any margin pressure from diversification are fully reflected in the lower share price.

"The current numbers and litigation overhang imply a share price that still embeds generous expectations for Embecta’s diversification and margin recovery, which this bearish narrative views as overvalued."
