Key Points

  • Bitcoin's recent momentum suggests that it has entered a new bull cycle.

  • The complex technical architecture of other popular blockchain networks introduces greater risk.

  • In the unproven cryptocurrency industry, longevity is a compelling trait to have.

The weather is turning cooler in much of the U.S., but Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) has been warming up. The leading digital asset's price has climbed 28% in the past two months (as of Oct. 8). Momentum is on its side, suggesting that the crypto winter ended during the summer.

As Bitcoin moves higher, investor interest in the industry might be rising. There is no shortage of cryptocurrencies out there to choose from. It can be intimidating trying to figure out which digital asset deserves your capital.

But it's fair to say that Bitcoin remains the best crypto to buy right now. Here are three reasons I think this is the case.

The bottom might be behind it

The crypto market is inherently unpredictable. History doesn't repeat. But investors can look to the past to get a better perspective on the current state of affairs.

There is a likelihood that Bitcoin's bottom is behind it. This is welcome news for investors, as the digital asset was 52% below its all-time record at one point earlier this year. This cryptocurrency follows a four-year cycle. Its bull-market tops and bear-market lows have been established roughly every 48 months. This supports an optimistic perspective.

Bitcoin's last bear-market bottom was in November 2022. According to the four-year cycle, this means that the low point was meant to happen in the back half of 2026 or early 2027. Of course, there's a chance the price falls in the near term. The recent momentum, however, is encouraging, especially since it is happening during a period of elevated inflation and tighter monetary policy.

Simplicity is a feature, not a bug

According to CoinMarketCap.com, there are 63 million different cryptocurrencies. Investors can pick from a sea of options. The vast majority of these serve no purpose and add no value. There are also a lot of meme tokens that cater to speculative behavior.

Besides these, investors might be drawn to smart-contract blockchains like Ethereum, Solana, and Cardano. While they are innovative in their own respects, the complexity of their technical setups introduces tremendous risk. Development pipelines get extended. Network outages occur. And there is still the open question of adoption and what these cryptocurrencies will be used for.

Bitcoin stands out. Its simplicity is a feature, not a bug. It's generally viewed as being a boring blockchain network since it operates with a very slow upgrade cycle dependent upon consensus agreement. This minimizes technical risk. Bitcoin's setup prioritizes security, predictability, and decentralization above anything else. It has never been hacked. Its fixed supply cap of 21 million units has never been altered. And its community of miners, nodes, developers, and users ensure its integrity.

Bitcoin is an immutable digital ledger. This leaves innovation to occur in the surrounding ecosystem, pushing risk away from blockchain.

Pick the proven digital asset in a risky market

When it comes to an entirely novel and unproven industry like cryptocurrencies, it's easy to get sucked into the exciting opportunities that might have much higher return potential than Bitcoin. These digital assets also present significant risk, though. That's why the best move is simply to focus on the safe choice.

Bitcoin has been around for almost two decades. That durability reduces uncertainty and is a clear sign that it likely has a long life ahead of it. The first-mover advantage has resulted in a huge market cap of $1.7 trillion, supporting deep liquidity. The Bitcoin brand name is unrivaled not only in the crypto industry but in global financial markets. That can help to attract capital over time.

Bitcoin's price has surged 13,420% during the past decade. The pace of its gains during the next 10 years will probably decline. However, it has the greatest chance of long-term survival out of any cryptocurrency. And that makes it the best one to buy right now.
