A $1.5 Billion Reason Why Wolfspeed Is in Focus Today

Listen to the news

Wolfspeed (WOLF) shares opened higher on Thursday after the semiconductor company secured a conditional commitment for up to $1.5 billion in long-term financing from the U.S. Department of Defense. The financing is aimed at expanding WOLF’s domestic production of silicon carbide materials and wide-bandgap power devices, particularly for defense and other national-security applications.

Despite today’s gains, Wolfspeed stock is down about 60% versus its year-to-date high.

Significance of DoW Financing for Wolfspeed Stock

The proposed financing would come as a senior secured, delayed-draw term loan with a 30-year term, giving Wolfspeed access to substantial long-duration capital to fund its domestic expansion.

In its press release, management said the money will support silicon carbide production, additional gallium nitride capabilities and radiation-hardening tech for defense applications.

The announcement is particularly significant for WOLF given its emergence from Chapter 11 last year and the continued cash burn.

Wolfspeed ended fiscal 2026 with roughly $1.1 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments, while its Q4 operating cash flow was negative $54 million.

The proposed government support could therefore provide additional financial flexibility while reinforcing WOLF’s strategic importance to the U.S. semiconductor and defense supply chain.

Caution Is Warranted in Playing WOLF Shares

On the flip side, investors must note that the DoD’s commitment remains contingent on due diligence, definitive agreements, government approvals, appropriations, and other contingencies.

Wolfspeed would also issue warrants representing up to 7.5% of its fully diluted equity as financing is drawn. Simply put, the financing is not guaranteed, while potential dilution from warrants could limit shareholder upside.

Even from a technical perspective, Wolfspeed shares did test their 100-day moving average (MA) but failed to ultimately break above it this morning, indicating bears have not entirely relinquished control this year.

Wall Street’s Consensus View on Wolfspeed

While WOLF shares currently sit miles below their year-to-date high, Wall Street analysts caution against betting on a swift recovery.

According to Barchart, the consensus rating on Wolfspeed sits at “Hold” only, and the mean price target of $27.50 actually suggests potential downside of roughly 10% from current levels.
