The Bet Siltronic Holders Made

Simply Wall St·10/08/2026 01:45:56
Listen to the news

Siltronic spent much of 2026 in the headlines for the wrong reasons, with a steep share price drop after weak wafer demand and a swing from profit to loss. For Siltronic shareholders, the return from the start of the year was 64.6%, including dividends. If you were deciding on 1 January whether to buy, you had only analyst debates about FabNext, long-term contracts and AI wafer demand to go on, not this volatility. What exactly did that upbeat story require you to believe?

A Narrative on Simply Wall St is one investor's written case for a company, with its growth, margin and multiple assumptions spelled out. Those assumptions imply an estimated Fair Value.

The Two Siltronic Stories Investors Were Arguing About

The shares cost €48.9 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at Siltronic then was really choosing between two very different stories about what its wafer capacity and contracts might deliver.

The bullish narrative put fair value at €64 and focused on Siltronic converting demand for AI, automotive and advanced 300mm wafers into higher margins, supported by long-dated supply agreements that analysts expected to support earnings visibility through 2028 to 2030.

The more cautious case used a fair value of €45.88 and focused on inventory overhang, heavy FabNext capital spending and rising international competition, with the risk that these pressures would limit revenue growth and keep profitability constrained.

What The Results Changed For The Siltronic Story

The clearest new fact for Siltronic was the Q2 2026 report. Revenue slipped from €329.1m to €321.6m, and net income moved from a €11.5m profit to a €52.1m loss. Net margin declined from 3.5% to a loss of 16.2%, which challenged the bullish idea that long-term contracts would already be supporting stronger profitability.

The lesson is simple. When a thesis hinges on margin resilience, you track net margin and absolute profit each quarter and test whether contracts, capacity additions and mix are actually holding those lines.

What Siltronic's Rally Says About Expectations Now

Siltronic now trades at €83.95, after a 64.6% total return from the start of the year. The current Narrative sets its Fair Value above that quoted level.

The Narrative focuses on wafer market structure, FabNext cash economics and an earnings picture that depreciation currently masks. It argues the share price still does not fully reflect a stronger cash flow profile if utilisation and pricing improve together.

"The market sees a loss-making wafer maker. I see a semiconductor oligopoly where volumes are recovering just as depreciation is about to peak. Siltronic AG (ETR:WAF) makes the hyperpure silicon wafers that sit underneath virtually every advanced semiconductor."

Another Way To Play AI Demand?

Siltronic puts you close to the wafers. You could also look at who soaks up that chip capacity.

AI training needs huge clusters of processors working in parallel. Those buyers want powerful racks, plus the software stack that keeps them fully used.

One hardware and software specialist is trying to sit at that junction. Its plan leans on staying ahead in chip design and AI tools.

The catch is clear. Competition, cheaper open platforms and politics around electricity use all press on that ambition.
