Precision Drilling spent 2026 sending mixed signals. Quarterly headlines featured a revenue rise but a swing from profit to a small loss, alongside fresh questions about rig demand and day-rate durability, yet the share price quietly moved a different way. Holding Precision Drilling from the start of the year would have returned 24.4%, including dividends. If you had faced that decision on 1 January, which story would you have trusted more: the business wobble or the market’s confidence?
The useful thing about a Narrative is that the reasoning is checkable: the assumptions sit beside the argument, and together they imply an estimated Fair Value you can disagree with.
Precision Drilling is not the only name tied to this theme. Zero in on 89 robotics and automation stocks and compare how each one is priced.
The shares cost CA$98.49 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at Precision Drilling then had to choose between two sharply different but plausible stories.
On the bullish side, the Fair Value sat at CA$120, built on a belief that high-spec rigs would stay in demand, with revenue assumed to grow 1.9% a year and profit margins rising from 5.7% to 9.2% by 2028.
The bearish Narrative pointed to a Fair Value of CA$77, warning that an accelerating energy transition could leave the rig fleet underused and margins slipping from 5.7% to 5.2%.
The clearest test of the Precision Drilling story came from Q2 2026, when revenue reached CA$452.8 million compared with CA$406.615 million a year earlier, yet the firm moved from a CA$16.267 million profit to a CA$1.195 million loss and net margin slipped from 4.0% to -0.3%. That combination supported the cautious case on profitability even as activity levels looked healthier.
For any contractor like Precision Drilling, the key assumption is often not volume but margin durability. When you assess another cyclical stock, track whether rising sales actually convert into positive, or improving, net margins in the following results before leaning on any profit-led Narrative.
Precision Drilling now trades at CA$126 and the selected bullish Narrative sees Fair Value above that level. The lens has shifted from past margin slips to what a tighter, higher-spec rig market might mean for future earnings power.
That Narrative argues today’s price still does not fully credit the potential for buybacks and upgraded, lower-emission rigs to lift long-run earning capacity.
"Surging operator preference for high-specification, emissions-reducing rigs and digital automation aligns with rising environmental standards globally, enabling Precision to command premium day rates, sustain utilization above peers, and structurally increase net margins as customers pay up for lower-carbon, higher-efficiency drilling solutions."
