07:23 AM EDT, 10/05/2026 (MT Newswires) -- British telco BT Group (BT-A.L) purchased local peer TalkTalk Telecommunications to save the beleaguered company from collapse after it failed to find a buyer for its consumer and wholesale operations. The deal entails the acquisition of TalkTalk and its consumer and wholesale business, PlatformX Communications, out of administration on a debt-free basis, ensuring service continuity for TalkTalk's 2.5 million customers across the UK, according to a Monday release. BT said it stepped in after an unsuccessful sale process for PlatformX, aiming to protect customers and critical national infrastructure related to health, emergency services, defense, banking and government, among others. The deal is anticipated to result in a total cash impact of 400 million pounds sterling in fiscal 2027, comprising consideration, transaction costs and other cash impacts. BT and TalkTalk will continue to operate separately until the regulatory process is completed, with a review of the deal anticipated to be initiated by regulators over the coming weeks. "Phone and broadband services are vital national infrastructure. If TalkTalk services fail, there is a genuine risk to life and public services - including to hospitals, schools and emergency care," said Lisa Nandy, UK Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, in a separate government release. Nandy issued a public interest intervention notice regarding the transaction, asking the country's competition regulator to report back to her by Oct. 19. In a separate release, the Competition and Markets Authority launched a merger inquiry regarding the acquisition. The invitation to comment on the transaction is set to close Oct. 9.
