He also said that the planned Rasht-Astara railway will have a transformative impact. The railway will connect the Iranian city of Rasht to Astara on the Azerbaijani border. He said, “This project, funded by Russia and Iran, is a key component of the international north-south transport corridor. The transport corridor connects Europe, Russia with the Gulf region and India via Azerbaijan and Iran.” Medvedev also said that Russia plans to build a new nuclear power plant in Iran as an additional project in addition to the Bushehr nuclear power plant. “Iran plays a key role in ensuring the security of the Strait of Hormuz,” he stressed.
