On October 1, the Tarim Oilfield earthquake exploration well 1, located on the northern edge of the Taklimakan Desert, completed core extraction operations and obtained 6 meters of continuous rock core at 8080 meters underground. These gray stones come from the Cambrian Yultus Formation and have been sleeping underground for 500 million years. This is the first time that hydrocarbon source rock has been removed at this depth from the northwest edge of the Tarim Basin. Xu Yanan, Director of the Taiben Area Exploration Project Department of CNPC's Tarim Oilfield Exploration Division: “This is the baby. With these precious rocks, we can analyze and evaluate the oil and gas generation capacity below 8,000 meters, what is the thickness of the oil and gas, and what is the degree of oil and gas maturity. This is also another time we have removed the hydrocarbon source rock below 8,000 meters after the Wanmike exploration well, demonstrating an important advance in our drilling technology.” China's deep-sea oil and gas exploration is ushering in a critical leap forward. Up to now, the Tarim Oilfield has drilled more than 270 wells at 8,000 meters deep, accounting for more than 50% of China's total volume. In 2025, it took the lead in drilling China's first super10,000 meter deep well - deep Taco 1, with an annual output of more than 20 million tons of ultra-deep oil and gas. It has built China's largest ultra-deep oil and gas production base, leading and driving the progress of China's deep-sea oil and gas exploration and development related industries and key core technologies.
