US Senate Democrats are questioning the legality and prudence of the Pentagon's plan to buy shares in a Venezuelan oil company, paving the way for possible subsequent related investigations. Four senior Democratic members of the Senate said in a letter to senior Trump administration officials that the Pentagon's proposed acquisition of shares in North American Blue Energy Partners has a weak legal basis and will also damage the country's democratic transformation process. This group of lawmakers includes Democratic Chief Representative Jeanne Shaheen of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee. They asked the Trump administration to submit the text and full terms of the agreement before finalizing the deal. Lawmakers also asked the US side to explain the legal basis for the Pentagon Strategic Capital Office to acquire shares in foreign oil companies, and asked how the State Council will pay for the purchase of crude oil produced by the oil company.
