Toshiba plans to double the production capacity of mechanical hard drives for artificial intelligence data centers within the 2027 fiscal year. The company will invest approximately 60 billion yen to expand facilities in the Philippines to establish a more stable supply system and provide key components for AI infrastructure. This expansion is the company's first large-scale investment in the HDD business in about five years. In addition to adding production lines at the factory, Toshiba will also manufacture new products, which can increase the storage capacity of a single hard drive by up to 40%. Demand for HDD storage capacity in AI data centers continues to expand, and Toshiba will continue to make capital expenditure. The goal is to achieve mass production of 65TB hard drives by 2030, and eventually mass production of 100TB hard drives. Solid-state drives are faster to read and write than HDDs, but they cost about 20 times as much as the latter. The tight supply of memory chips is further boosting HDD demand.
