South Korea's procuratorial system underwent major reforms on October 2. The Public Prosecution Office and the Serious Crimes Investigation Office were formally established on the same day, and the Public Prosecutor's Office, which had been in operation for 78 years, was officially closed. The system where the procuratorial authorities had both investigation and prosecution powers for a long time became history. According to the revised Criminal Procedure Law, the Public Prosecution Service Law, and the Serious Crimes Investigation Office Law, the Public Prosecution Service is mainly responsible for initiating and maintaining public prosecutions, while the Serious Crimes Investigation Department is responsible for investigating seven types of serious crimes. Most criminal cases are investigated by the police, and the Public Prosecution Service no longer has investigation powers. Although the name of the agency “Public Prosecutor's Office” no longer exists, the titles “Public Prosecutor” and “Attorney General” have been retained.
