According to Japanese media reports, defendant Murata Kodai, a former third-class lieutenant in the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, was charged with “coercion” for breaking into the Chinese Embassy in Japan with a knife and threatening staff inside the museum. Today, in the first public trial held by the Tokyo District Court, Kodai Murata denied the contents of the indictment. However, he pleaded guilty to the charges of “invading a building” and “violating the Guns and Swords Act.” The Tokyo District Public Prosecutor's Office carried out a psychiatric examination on him and determined that he was capable of criminal responsibility, and therefore prosecuted him. Previously, Murata was dismissed by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force by disciplinary action.
