The nursing student at the Ciziks School of Nursing at UTHealth in Houston receives the $1,000 award in recognition of her commitment to geriatric nursing.
HOUSTON, Sept. 30, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The SignatureCare Emergency Center Scholarship Award Committee is proud to announce Michaela Craig, a nursing student at the Ciziks School of Nursing at UTHealth in Houston, TX, as the recipient of the 2026 Fall Semester Medical and Health Scholarship.

The committee selected Michaela for the $1,000 bi-annual award based on her commitment to making patients feel better and the personal experiences that have shaped her path toward medicine.
The scholarship helps qualified U.S. college students cover tuition and other college-related expenses. Applicants are required to meet specific eligibility criteria and submit a 500-word essay responding to the question: "Who or what inspired you to enter the medical field?"
For Michaela, the answer is deeply personal.
"When I was younger, I spent more time in hospitals and doctors' offices than most kids because of my own health issues. I don't remember every diagnosis or appointment, but I do remember the nurses. They were the people who made scary situations feel a little less overwhelming. They explained things in a way I could understand, made me laugh when I was nervous, and always seemed to know when I needed reassurance.
"Looking back, I realize they weren't just treating me, they were caring for me as a person. I didn't know it then, but those experiences planted the first seed that one day I might want to do the same for someone else," she said.
Michaela added that her grandmother's health issues and the experience they had dealing with nurses further cemented her desire to become a nurse.
"Another experience that shaped me was helping care for my grandmother after she developed dementia. During COVID, she lived with my family, and I saw how difficult dementia can be—not just for the person living with it, but for everyone who loves them. Some days she remembered us, and other days she didn't. Watching her slowly change was heartbreaking, but it also taught me a lot about patience and compassion. It made me realize how important it is for patients to have healthcare providers who treat them with dignity, even when they can't fully advocate for themselves. That experience sparked my interest in caring for older adults and showed me that nursing is about supporting both patients and their families."
She thanked the SignatureCare Emergency Center Scholarship Committee for the recognition.
"Receiving the scholarship award would help relieve some of the financial stress that comes with nursing school and allow me to focus more on becoming the best nurse I can be. More importantly, it would be a reminder that others believe in my potential and are willing to invest in my future. The people who inspired me to pursue nursing probably didn't realize the impact they were having on my life, but I hope to have that same impact on someone else one day. If I can help a patient feel a little less afraid, or a family feels a little more supported, I'll know I've chosen the right career."
