What A 27% Fall Did To The Intuitive Surgical Case

Listen to the news

FDA safety alerts on certain da Vinci stapler products and a sharp reset in analyst targets have kept Intuitive Surgical in the headlines, while quarterly results have continued to clear earnings estimates. Holding Intuitive Surgical from the start of the year would have meant a 26.7% loss, including dividends. If you had bought on 1 January, how should you now think about a business delivering strong reported growth yet a falling share price, and what does that imply for expectations around da Vinci 5 and its digital roadmap?

The move put Intuitive Surgical in the middle of this trade. Scan 93 robotics and automation stocks for other companies exposed to it.

The Two Intuitive Surgical Stories Investors Were Pricing In

The shares cost US$566 at the start of the period, which left investors weighing two very different stories about where Intuitive Surgical might head next.

On the bullish side, one camp argued that da Vinci 5 and the digital ecosystem could justify a Fair Value of US$685, a notional price implied by assumptions about future earnings. That view leaned on faster adoption of da Vinci 5 and its data tools, as well as aging populations supporting procedure volumes.

The bearish camp pointed to a Fair Value of US$350, again an implied level based on its own set of forecasts. That story focused on global healthcare cost pressure, tariffs estimated at nearly 2% of revenue in 2025, and tougher competition as key margin risks.

What The Results Changed For The Intuitive Surgical Debate

Q2 2026 results gave Intuitive Surgical bulls fresh support, with revenue of US$2.89b and net income of US$818.1m both above Q2 2025 levels, and net margin edging up from 27.0% to 28.3%. FDA safety alerts, stapler recalls, and tariff plus reimbursement worries still backed the cautious case. Overall, the evidence cut both ways.

The lesson for any stock that trades on a product upgrade story is clear. Treat promised step changes in margin and cash generation as hypotheses, and track them directly in reported net margin and absolute profit before treating the growth story as proven.

What You Would Be Paying For In Intuitive Surgical Today

Intuitive Surgical now trades at US$412, with this year's move leaving the stock down 26.7% from the start of the year. The selected Narrative sees Fair Value above that level, built around da Vinci 5 and a data driven ecosystem wrapped around each installed robot.

The key question is whether a buyer today believes da Vinci driven procedures and associated parts, software and services can keep supporting the sort of recurring, high margin revenue stream described in the Narrative.

"A Growing Installed Base is good but the Recurring Revenue makes the Difference. Today, 9,539 da Vinci systems are installed worldwide, with an annual growth rate of 15.1%. Each year, these systems perform approximately 2.2 million procedures, a number that has been growing at a rate of 22.2% per year."

Looking One Step Beyond Intuitive

If Intuitive Surgical is your way into surgical robotics, you might also consider who manages the care around those procedures.

Hospitals and clinics face rising medical costs, complex billing and shifting reimbursement rules.

One large health services group uses software, data and AI programs to target lower administrative workloads and tighter cost control.

It links those tools with value based care contracts, home based support and pharmacy services designed to keep patients out of hospital.

If robotic procedures continue to spread, pressure on insurers and care managers to handle that complexity more efficiently only increases.

That argument has a Narrative and a number behind it. → See the company one Narrative values 28% above its price
