Update: Google Appeals EU Antitrust Orders Over Search Data Sharing, AI Interoperability

06:41 AM EDT, 09/29/2026 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates to add more information as well as Google and European Commission's statements) Alphabet's (ABEA.F) Google is contesting two European Union orders to open up its Android operating system to other artificial intelligence developers and provide online search data to competitors before the Luxembourg-based General Court. "We're appealing decisions that will force us to share people's private search history without sufficient anonymisation and weaken vital security protections on Android. People use Search for their most personal questions ... and mandating we share these personal queries without adequate safeguards would cause irreversible harm to user privacy," Oliver Bethell, the tech giant's senior director of competition, said in a Tuesday statement to MT Newswires. The European Commission in July 2026 issued the two measures under the Digital Markets Act. It required search data sharing from January 2027, while expecting users to see changes to Android as of July 2027. The Commission has noted Alphabet's appeal and intends to defend its decisions in court, a spokesperson told MT Newswires. "More generally, it should be stressed that the Commission's two specification decisions carefully consider the integrity and security with respect to the features involved, as well as ensuring the protection of the personal data of end users."
