The Zhitong Finance App learned that analysts were concerned about the future of MongoDB (MDB.US), while retail investors were extremely optimistic before Investor Day. MongoDB's stock price fell more than 18% on Monday after the company's CEO Chirantan “CJ” Desai (Chirantan “CJ” Desai) suddenly left his job and will go to Meta Platforms (META.US) to lead its newly established enterprise platform business. Daisy has been in the company's top position for less than a year and is about to leave.
Stifel said this development is difficult to interpret in a positive direction, especially since investors have been waiting for Daisy to turn his plans to accelerate Atlas (cloud database service) growth into stronger results. The agency said that as MongoDB is about to usher in a high-profile Tuesday Investor Day, this abrupt handover is likely to dampen market sentiment.
Despite leadership uncertainty, Stifel mentioned the stock's valuation level after falling 18%. Its stock price was about 6.5 times the expected revenue for 2028 at the time, and Stifel believes this may limit further downward pressure in the short term, but recovery may still take time. MongoDB's stock price fell 20% cumulatively during the year. Stifel maintains a “buy” rating.
In response, the MongoDB board of directors appointed Dev Ittycheria (Dev Ittycheria) as interim president and CEO. The board of directors has initiated a formal succession search process and hired the assistance of an executive headhunting company. Itticeria served as MongoDB's President and CEO from 2014 to 2025.
William Blair emphasized the importance of Itticeria's return. The agency says his return is a credible source of stability as investors seek clear answers on where MongoDB is headed next.
The agency said that as the company's annual Investor Day approaches, the timing of this arrangement “creates more questions than answers.” The agency pointed out that Daisy's tenure was very short, making this sudden change particularly noteworthy, and maintained the stock's “outperforming the market” rating.
This leadership transition comes at a time when database technology is facing changes in the competitive landscape, including the growing momentum of Postgres (database management system) in the application of coding agents.
On Stocktwits, MongoDB's retail sentiment jumped from “bearish” the previous day to “extremely bullish.”
One user said, “I'm not afraid of META at all. Their corporate business is likely to go awry. Great idea, but they can't take away customers, and the cost of switching is extremely high. Most likely, they will only be able to get startups. Mature giants like MongoDB and ServiceNow (NOW.US) are the long-term winners here.”
Another user said, “An irrational sell-off. After Investor Day, it will be back above $350 tomorrow. I hope someone from AWS, Oracle, ServiceNow, and Saftex will take over as CEO.”
