THE TAKEAWAY

A brewing nor'easter has the potential to cause significant impacts as it batters the East Coast this week.

Parts of the East Coast will be battered by gusty winds and rain through the workweek as the first nor'easter of fall develops.

TIMELINE: HERE'S WHERE AND WHEN MAJOR US CITIES WILL SEE IMPACTS FROM THE DEVELOPING NOR'EASTER

The storm is expected to emerge off the coast toward the end of the week and could bring high surf, strong winds, coastal flooding and severe beach erosion through the weekend.

Some areas expected to see wind gusts up to 60 mph, with offshore waves reaching 15 to 18 feet.

The system started developing Monday and will continue through the weekend as a sharp fall cold front pushes off the coast, bringing rain to the Ohio Valley and parts of the Mid-Atlantic while strong high pressure builds to the north.
