The Centre for Food Safety of the Hong Kong Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced on September 21 that in response to a notification from the World Organization for Animal Health that the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza outbreak occurred in Wright County, Minnesota, USA, the Centre immediately instructed the industry to suspend imports of poultry meat and poultry products from the region to protect public health in Hong Kong. According to the Census and Statistics Department, Hong Kong imported about 24,190 tonnes of chilled and frozen poultry meat and about 2 million poultry eggs from the US in the first six months of this year.
