Volodymyr Zelenskyy Touts Major Oil Strike in Russia Despite Trump Warning: ‘Glory to Ukraine’

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy touted an attack on a major Russian oil refinery as the war, which has lasted for more than four years, continues as global energy markets face disruptions from the U.S.-Iran conflict and attacks on energy infrastructure in the Russia-Ukraine war.

Glory to Ukraine, Zelenskyy Says

In a post on X on Sunday, Zelenskyy shared that Ukraine’s long-range missiles had a “significant” impact in the Moscow region. “One of Russia’s key oil industry facilities,” as well as a “logistics facility were hit” by Ukrainian strikes. “These are billions of dollars that sustain the war machine,” he added.

“Moscow must end its brutal war and choose peace instead of building layered rings of air defense at the expense of other regions,” Zelenskyy said, outlining that the option for de-escalation was still “on the table,” but added that there must be “political will” to reach de-escalation. He thanked allies for “sanctions” against Russia. “Glory to Ukraine!” Zelenskyy said.

Trump Urges No Strikes on Russian Oil

Last week, President Donald Trump had called on Zelenskyy to avoid hitting Russian oil refineries, saying that there were other targets that Ukraine could aim for. “He [Zelenskyy] has to stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia,” Trump said, adding that the strikes were hurting the global diesel supply.

Notably, oil shocks have caused skyrocketing fuel prices in the U.S., with Senate Majority Leader John Thune last week saying that the U.S. may consider banning the export of diesel in a bid to keep prices down. According to data collected by the American Automobile Association (AAA), the national average price of diesel was $6.5050/gallon on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that it would be impossible for the U.S. not to suffer from a “blowback” as it targets Iran over the Strait of Hormuz. He reaffirmed Tehran’s control over the waterway, which is responsible for moving a fifth of the world’s oil supply.
