Some of the losses seen by insiders who purchased HK$15.7m worth of HKC International Holdings Limited (HKG:248) shares over the past year were recovered after the stock increased by 12% over the past week. However, the purchase is proving to be an expensive wager as insiders are yet to get ahead of their losses which currently stand at HK$1.9m since the time of purchase.
While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Executive Chairman & CEO Chung Yee Chan bought HK$15m worth of shares at a price of HK$0.28 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of HK$0.24. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.
