Listen to the news

Usually, when one insider buys stock, it might not be a monumental event. But when multiple insiders are buying like they did in the case of IC Group Holdings Inc. (CVE:ICGH), that sends out a positive message to the company's shareholders.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At IC Group Holdings

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Independent Director Robert White bought CA$200k worth of shares at a price of CA$0.50 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of CA$0.49. It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid CA$625k for 1.25m shares. But they sold 558.84k shares for CA$252k. In total, IC Group Holdings insiders bought more than they sold over the last year. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. Insider Ownership Of IC Group Holdings

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. IC Group Holdings insiders own about CA$11m worth of shares (which is 64% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
