On September 18, 2026, the People's Bank of China and the Bank of the People's Democratic Republic of Laos jointly hosted the launch conference for cross-border digital payment connectivity between China and Laos in Nanning, Guangxi. Lu Lei, Deputy Governor of the People's Bank of China, and Surisak Samnuong, Deputy Governor of the Bank of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, attended and delivered speeches. Cross-border digital payment connectivity between China and Laos is an important step in implementing the consensus of the leaders of the two countries and deepening bilateral financial cooperation. It is also a phased achievement reached within the framework of the “Memorandum of Understanding on Strengthening Cooperation in Financial Innovation, Digital Payments, and Fiat Digital Currencies” signed by the central bank governors of the two countries in June 2026. Heads of relevant departments of the central banks of China and Laos, and relevant officials from commercial banks and participating enterprises attended the meeting.
