Hong Kong's GDP rose 4.3% year-on-year in real terms in the second quarter of 2026

The Zhitong Finance App learned that the Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today (September 18) released preliminary figures on GDP by economic activity for the second quarter of 2026 based on month-on-month volume calculation. According to preliminary statistics, the overall gross domestic product increased by 4.3% in real terms in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the same period of the previous year, while the increase in the first quarter was 5.9%.

GDP figures by economic activity show the production value of individual economic activities. Production value is measured by added value or net production value. The calculation method is to deduct the intermediate production consumption consumed during the production process from the gross product. The volume valuation of GDP by economic activity (in terms of month-on-month volume) excludes the impact of price changes and helps analyze the real growth of output value in various industries.

According to the analysis of the constituent services industry and comparison with the same period of the previous year, the total added value of all service activities actually increased by 5.1% in the second quarter of 2026, while the increase in the first quarter was 6.0%.

The value added in the import and export trade, wholesale and retail industries actually increased by 12.8% in the second quarter of 2026 compared with the same period of the previous year, compared with 14.5% in the first quarter.

The value added of the accommodation and food service industry actually declined by 0.1% in the second quarter of 2026 compared with the same period of the previous year, while in the first quarter it increased by 0.5%.

The added value of transportation, warehousing, postal and courier services actually increased by 1.1% in the second quarter of 2026 compared with the same period of the previous year, compared with 4.1% in the first quarter.

The value added of the information and communications industry increased by 2.9% in real terms in the second quarter of 2026 compared with the same period of the previous year, compared with a 3.6% increase in the first quarter.

The value added in the finance and insurance sector increased by 7.4% in real terms in the second quarter of 2026 compared with the same period of the previous year, compared with 7.8% in the first quarter.

The added value of the real estate, professional and commercial services sector recorded a real increase of 2.4% in the second quarter of 2026 compared with the same period of the previous year, compared with 2.7% in the first quarter.

The value added of public administration, social and personal services increased by 0.9% in real terms in the second quarter of 2026 compared with the same period of the previous year, compared with 2.0% in the first quarter.

As far as industries other than the service industry are concerned, the value added of the local manufacturing industry actually increased by 2.3% in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year, while the increase in the first quarter was 3.1%.

The added value of the electricity, gas and tap water supply and waste management industries increased by 2.5% in real terms in the second quarter of 2026 compared with the same period of the previous year, compared to 1.2% in the first quarter.

The added value of the construction industry actually declined by 17.0% in the second quarter of 2026 compared with the same period of the previous year, while it increased by 8.4% in the first quarter.
