Two senators asked the US Federal Trade Commission to investigate how Amazon and Walmart's AI-based shopping chatbots handle “Made in America” related product information to consumers. Wisconsin Democratic Senator Tami Baldwin and Florida Republican Senator Rick Scott sent letters to Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson and Member Mark R. Midall. According to the letter, chatbots may “conceal and suppress” two types of information: which products are produced in the US, and which products falsely claim to be made in the US. Senator Baldwin said in a statement that Amazon and Walmart are harming the interests of local American manufacturers. She said, “If Americans want to buy American products, Amazon and Walmart should help them achieve it, rather than handing over business opportunities to overseas imitations.”
