The international research institute “World Weather Attribution Coalition” recently released an analysis report stating that climate change was an important driver of the landslide disaster in the Nepalese border region at the end of August. The report, entitled “Rapid Warming in the Himalayas Intensifies Chain Geological Disasters, Exceeding Adaptation Limits,” said that the landslide disaster was triggered by an ice and rock collapse at the Liliang Peak in Nepal. Water, ice, rocks, and sediments formed mudslides that swept through the riverside and destroyed homes, roads, bridges, etc., causing major disasters. The report emphasizes that the disaster was not caused by a single extreme weather event, but rather a “complex event” caused by climate warming, glacier retreat, thawing permafrost, and geological instability.
