The Zhitong Finance App learned that Hong Kong International Airport continued to record steady growth in August 2026, handling a total of 5.86 million passengers and 34,995 flights taking off and landing, with year-on-year increases of 3.5% and 0.5%, respectively.
Transit and transit passengers recorded significant double-digit growth during the month, which became the main driving force for the increase in overall passenger traffic volume. On the market side, mainland China and South Korea continued to perform well, while the decline in the Middle East region narrowed further.
In the first eight months of this year, airport passenger traffic increased 10.1% year on year to 44.3 million passengers, and flight take-off and landing volume increased 3.5% year on year to 269,900 flights. In the past 12 months, airport passenger traffic increased 11.4% year on year to 65 million passengers, and flight take-off and landing volume increased 4.5% to 40,3850.
In terms of freight, freight volume fell slightly by 1.2% year on year to 422,000 metric tons in August 2026. Among them, export freight volume decreased by 8.8% year on year, but re-export and import freight volume recorded increases of 18.2% and 3.6% respectively, offsetting part of the decline in exports. Among the major trading regions, the Southeast Asian and mainland China markets showed resilience, which helped mitigate the impact of the European and Middle Eastern markets, which were weak due to changes in the geo-trade situation.
From January to August this year, mainland China, Southeast Asia and Europe recorded year-on-year increases of 17%, 14% and 8%, respectively, offsetting the decline in North America and the Middle East. During the period, freight volume increased 2.6% year over year to 3.34 million tonnes. Over the past 12 months, the freight volume exceeded 5.15 million tonnes, an increase of 2.7% over the previous year.
