What Happened?

Shares of energy transition company GE Vernova (NYSE:GEV) jumped 4.5% in the afternoon session after the company projected strong backlog growth at the Morgan Stanley Laguna Conference, estimating its total order backlog will surpass $200 billion in early 2027.

During the conference presentation, management detailed that the company's backlog reached $176 billion in the second quarter of 2026. This expansion is driven by stronger pricing, higher gas-turbine production run rates, and over $5 billion in electrification orders from data centers in the first half of the year. Chief Executive Officer Scott Strazik emphasized robust demand visibility across the business, pointing to a planned 50% increase in gas power capacity in the current year.

In addition, the company projected it will secure $100 billion in cumulative future services revenue by the end of 2027. Management also noted that upcoming financial reports will provide further detailed guidance regarding equipment margins, backlog figures, and expectations heading into its spring 2027 capital markets day.

The shares closed the day at $926.75, up 5% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

GE Vernova’s shares are very volatile and have had 27 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 2 days ago when the stock dropped 8.6% on the news that GLJ Research initiated coverage on the stock with a Sell rating and a $470 price target. GLJ Research analyst Gordon Johnson III outlined a bearish stance, cautioning investors that the stock is priced as a high-growth company despite the cyclical nature of its core gas-turbine operations per TipRanks. Furthermore, the analyst highlighted that persistent and ongoing financial losses in GE Vernova's wind energy business continue to pose risks to its performance.

GE Vernova is up 36.4% since the beginning of the year, but at $927.07 per share, it is still trading 21.1% below its 52-week high of $1,175 from June 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of GE Vernova’s shares at the IPO in March 2024 would now be looking at an investment worth $7,063.
