Preliminary statistics released by Japan's Ministry of Finance on the 16th showed that due to rising costs of imported commodities such as crude oil, Japan's trade deficit reached 1.11 trillion yen in August, and has been in a trade deficit for 4 consecutive months. According to the data, Japan's imports in August were 11.15 trillion yen, up 28.0% year on year. Among them, crude oil imports surged 58.7% year on year due to a recovery in import volume combined with high import unit prices. Crude oil imports from the US were about 11 times that of the same period last year, reaching 40.4 billion yen. Japan's crude oil imports in August were 11.594 million kiloliters, up 3.6% year on year. Among them, crude oil imports from the Middle East fell 30.9% year on year to 7.25 million kiloliters, lower than the same period last year for 5 consecutive months; crude oil imports from the US reached 3.65 million kiloliters, about 7 times the same period last year, and higher than the same period last year for 5 consecutive months. Furthermore, Japan's exports increased 19.3% year-on-year to 10.05 trillion yen in August, driven by increased exports of electronic components such as semiconductors, automobiles, and semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
