03:55 AM EDT, 09/15/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The German government demands that Commerzbank (CBK.F) remain listed and headquartered in Frankfurt as Italian peer UniCredit (UCG.MI) moves closer to taking control of the bank, London's Financial Times reported on Monday. In a meeting with UniCredit Chief Executive Andrea Orcel, Germany's finance minister, Lars Klingbeil, sought safeguards for the interests of Commerzbank's 40,000 employees, FT said, citing a ministry spokesperson. Germany also wants Commerzbank to continue its role in financing local small and medium-sized businesses. The German Finance Ministry, Commerzbank and UniCredit did not immediately respond to requests for comments from MT Newswires.
