Insiders At Shaftesbury Capital Sold UK£2.6m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

Listen to the news

The fact that multiple Shaftesbury Capital PLC (LON:SHC) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Shaftesbury Capital Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The CEO & Executive Director, Ian Hawksworth, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for UK£1.5m worth of shares at a price of UK£1.39 each. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of UK£1.38. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern.

In total, Shaftesbury Capital insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Does Shaftesbury Capital Boast High Insider Ownership?

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Shaftesbury Capital insiders own about UK£7.7m worth of shares. That equates to 0.3% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
