Pakistan GasPort Co., Ltd., the operator of one of Pakistan's two major liquefied natural gas import terminals, is planning to purchase US cargo to fill the gas supply gap in the Persian Gulf and mitigate the energy shortage problem that has continued for several months and has had a serious impact. GasPort Chairman Iqbal Z. Ahmed said on the sidelines of Gastech, a large-scale liquefied natural gas industry exhibition held in Bangkok: “If we set our sights on the West, we can change the status quo and break the Middle East's control over supply.” He added that the company will seek to establish long-term alternative supply partnerships. He also said, “The US energy industry is about to usher in large-scale expansion. All it takes is a long-term partnership with them.” He called on the government to push ahead with relevant negotiations and consider allowing private companies such as GasPort to import liquefied natural gas. Ahmed said Pakistan's liquefied natural gas imports have dropped from a maximum of 10 to 12 shipments per month to only 2 to 3 shipments this month.
