Trump's nominee for medical director Nicole Safir will attend a Senate hearing next week. However, recently released financial disclosure documents show that this candidate, who may become America's Chief Doctor in the future, holds shares in tobacco, fast food, and carbonated drink companies. These companies' products are all linked to chronic diseases and public health issues that the US government is focusing on. According to regulatory documents, shares invested in by Safir include cigarette and e-cigarette producers Philip Morris International, Altria Group, and British American Tobacco; fast food giant McDonald's; and Yum! Restaurant Group, the parent company of brands such as KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell. Soft drink and energy drink companies Pepsi, Coca Cola, and Monster Drink. The position report also shows that Safir holds shares in a number of pharmaceutical companies, including Eli Lilly, Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, MSD, and Gilead Sciences. However, the financial disclosure itself does not mean that Safir has breached anything. According to the attached ethics agreement, she promised to sell the positions of more than 200 companies specified in the ethics agreement within 90 days of her nomination being confirmed, and avoid matters that could directly affect the financial interests of these companies before completing the disposal.
