Plug Power stock has delivered a very steep 91.5% decline over the past five years, yet it still screens as expensive on broad valuation checks. For investors, the puzzle is why a share price that has already retreated so far still does not look like a clear bargain on these models.
The issue now is whether Plug Power’s current market price already reflects the operational turnaround investors are hoping for or still embeds too much optimism for the risks involved.

P/S is a useful anchor for Plug Power because the business is still loss making, so revenue is the cleanest way to compare valuation. On this yardstick, the stock trades on a P/S of 4.0x, which is almost double the Electrical industry average of 2.0x and well above the peer group at about 1.2x. That is a rich tag for a hydrogen fuel cell specialist that is still working toward consistent profitability.
The more tailored fair P/S ratio for Plug Power is 0.7x. That is far below the current market multiple, and the gap is so wide because the model heavily penalises the recent losses, execution risk and revenue quality flagged in earlier sections. Despite the recent GenDrive refresh and asset sale plans that aim to support profitability targets into 2028, the valuation still implies investors are paying a high price for each dollar of sales compared with both peers and this risk adjusted fair range.
On a P/S basis, Plug Power screens as overvalued, with the share price implying a much richer revenue multiple than either peers or the risk model would suggest.

Plug Power still screens as overvalued on simple market multiples, even after a heavy five year share price decline and a tailored fair P/S ratio that sits well below the current level. Broader valuation checks remain weak, which suggests the market is still pricing in a meaningful improvement in profitability and execution rather than treating the stock as distressed. The key question from here is whether Plug Power can turn its refreshed products and restructuring efforts into durable margins that justify paying a premium for each dollar of revenue.
