The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Syrian Transitional Government issued a statement on September 9 condemning Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's illegal entry into Syrian territory, blatantly violating Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and threatening regional security and stability. On the same day, Netanyahu claimed at Mount Hermon, a strategic location in the Golan Heights occupied by Israel, that the Israeli army had achieved “absolute control” over a large area of southern Syria, which did not mean that Israel was “close to defeating Iran.” Israeli Defense Minister Katz said at Mount Hermon on the same day that Israel would not withdraw its troops from Syria. Israel occupied most of the Golan Heights in the 1967 Third Middle East War and has always refused to return it to Syria. After the dramatic political changes in Syria in December 2024, Israel also occupied the military buffer zone in the Golan Heights and Mount Hermon, and continued to launch attacks within Syria.
